River Sanginjoki
The Sanginjoki River is a continuous forested area about 20 kilometres from the centre of Oulu. The area has natural forest features, old spruce stands, as well as heaths and dry brushland. Endangered dwarf and rare bird species have been found in Sanginjoki.
The trails in the Sanginjoki Nature Reserve are suitable for day hiking or overnight trekking. The trails are easy to follow, as there are no steep climbs or otherwise difficult terrain on the Sanginjoki, and the numerous campfire sites mean that the intermediate stages are not too long.
The nature reserve is a popular place for berry picking and mushroom picking. Many species of old-growth forest birds can be seen here, such as the moonbird, blue-tailed godwit, downy woodpecker, grouse and sparrow owl. The Sangin River arm is a popular fishing area with a variety of marshes and rapids. There are several fireplaces along the river and a path along the riverbank along the bank.
In nature reserves, public rights of way do not apply as such. Always check the rules of the area before you go.
The Sanginjoki area is managed by Metsähallitus.
